Separately, Getler and reporter David Von Drehle agree it could have been made more clear that in Bush's State of the Union address, he referred to 34 countries helping the U.S. in Iraq.
Staff writer David Von Drehle says, "What seemed important to me was the president's rhetorical device of actually naming specific countries, quite a long list of them, to counter his critics. I thought it was an interesting and effective moment." Von Drehle's analysis, written on deadline, struck me as perceptive and well done. But he agrees that on this point, it would have been better to write that the president "referred to 34 countries aiding the Iraq effort, and even went to the trouble to list 17 of them by name."
