Because we are not stupid enough... Some privacy law in Tennessee has prompted schools to suspend honor rolls and other ways to recognize academic achievement. As you know, that's emphasized far too much in our culture.

The AP story reports that many parents are appalled but some educators feel vulnerable to lawsuits (by parents of students who don't make the lists). Then there's this:

[Principal Steven] Baum thinks spelling bees and other publicly graded events are leftovers from the days of ranking and sorting students.

"I discourage competitive games at school," he said. "They just don't fit my worldview of what a school should be."

I'll have to remember that the next time my boss tries to link my salary increase to job performance. Sorry, chief, that just doesn't fit my worldview of what an annual appraisal should be!
