This story in the sports section is about the difficulties faced by "emerging" women's sports, part of what happened with Title IX: sports such as bowling, archery, rowing and equestrian competitions were promoted as ways to increase female participation. And sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. The story avoids some of the more bizarre attempts to create women's teams out of nothing, though I'm not saying that's easy to do and clearly there are successes as well as failures. But when the people in this story complain about some of these sports being underfunded and neglected, all I can say is welcome to the club. I was never an athlete, but as an occasional spectator many years ago of men's college ice hockey, I can tell you my school had similar problems. The team was underfunded and was demoted to club status for financial reasons, despite having a dedicated core of supporters.
