I was very happy to see this observation from Jennifer Harper in the Washington Times today, from Networks milk story of shuttle disaster
Both ABC and CBS cut to portraits of the lost astronauts while President Bush gave his simple and eloquent message to the nation Saturday afternoon — a moment that should have stood alone without dramatic embellishment.

Yes, and why the hell did they do that? It's not enough that we have to put up with perpertual animations at the bottom of the screen, but some brilliant producer thinks it's his place to add to the drama when all I want is to hear what the president says. Next time it'll be the radio or C-Span.
