Wednesday is Venezuela Blog Day. My inept coding attempts did not succed in linking to the display banner shown around various precincts. But check out blogs like The Devil's Exrement and Tyromaniac. Tyro reports:

the supreme court has basically called off the referendum [on whether Chavez should remain in power], deleting the best hope to stop the strike with some dignity. The government, with the help of the court, is aiming at destroying the economy to get rid of the opposition and get rid of the electoral commission. I'm not saying they will get rid of this commission, I'm saying there won't be an independent electoral commission ever more. That is their plan for the perpetuation of power. It won't work for long, but it will take blood, sweat, and tears to bring them down.

I read somewhere on the web today that the country's GDP has fallen by 40%. Staggering.
