Maybe the cynical view is correct...it's just about money. Brace yourself for some heroic marketing campaign. This, from photographer Jason Grow in Boston, whose portfolio also includes Norman Mailer, CEO luminaries, etc.

UPDATE: This may be more about money than I thought. Apparently the Greater Hartford Open was in danger of being cancelled due to lack of corporate sponsorship. I haven't been able to nail down all the connections in a single news story, but now, apparently, enough sponsorships are assured. If there was a relationship between Whaley signing on and sponsors being revived, this could create a deliciously complex dilemma: All those men will not have been paid for finishing on top unless Susan Whaley had entered the tournament via the rigged advantage of a shortened course.

In other words, whoever finishes in the money will owe their victory to themselves, and their paycheck to Whaley.
