Ken Bode is Medill professor of journalism and was the host of Public
Television's Friday week-in-review show whose name escapes me at the moment--
it's the one hosted by the able Gwen Ifill. I felt sorry for the shameful way
Bode was kicked out of that job, but no more. From MediaNews.org:

Medill professor Ken Bode tells Suzanne Ryan: ''The whole city of Washington
is absolutely paralyzed and it's not because the media overplayed it. It's
because nine people are dead, and the public has an insatiable appetite for
information. Our job is to find out the facts and once we know them, tell the
public. Our job is not to decide if the public can handle it or if it will
compromise the investigation.''

Why is it not your job to decide if disclosing information will compromise the
investigation?

Is journalism so resolutely disconnected from society that you don't care if
you help the killer avoid arrest, Bode? Does it matter if someone tries to
murder me tonight?

Incredible.
