Stories that don't run in the Washington Post... include examples of armed civilians defending themselves against violence. This from the Tampa Tribune:
TAMPA - A homeowner shot dead an intruder who forced his way into the man's Northwest Tampa home early Saturday morning. Detectives are searching for a second man, an apparent accomplice, who fled the scene....
About 12:50 a.m., Lopez and three or four guests had finished watching a movie at his home, Winsett said. After the guests walked out and began walking toward their vehicles, two masked men entered Lopez's fenced yard....The men, armed with handguns, advanced toward the house and forced the guests to stand under the carport. Lopez was inside the house. He heard the commotion, went into a bedroom and grabbed two handguns. As Lopez walked out of the bedroom, one of the armed intruders entered the house. The intruder saw Lopez and approached him with a gun. Lopez shot the man several times without the intruder returning fire, Winsett said.
Tampa too far away? Let's try Winchseter, Va.; this from the Winchester Star:
Thomas Woodrow Dodson, 40, of the 1500 block of Passage Road in Stephens City, was allegedly killed by his estranged wife, Angela E. Dodson, after he broke into her house at 102 Caribou Trail in Shawneeland, Capt. Robert Eckman said. The Dodsons have been separated since this spring, and Angela Dodson, 40, obtained a restraining order against her husband in April because of spousal abuse, Eckman said. Shortly before 5 p.m. on Thursday, Thomas Dodson parked his car about 75 yards from his wife’s ranch house, Eckman said. He approached the house, ripped out the telephone lines, and attempted to kick in the back door, Eckman said. After he failed to break down the door, Dodson grabbed a large rock and broke a double pane of glass in the door, then crawled inside, the officer said. In the meantime, Angela Dodson grabbed the couple’s two boys — ages 2 and 7 — and took them into the master bedroom, locking herself inside with the children, Eckman said. As Thomas Dodson attempted to break down the bedroom door, Angela Dodson allegedly fired a .38-caliber revolver through the door and wounded her husband in the leg, Eckman said.
Magic word for Winchester Star: editing. But anyway, after this guy was shot, he runs into a friend of Angela Dodson, is told to settle down and let someone call 911, but instead he returns to the woman's room and tries fighting his way in again whereupon he is shot and killed.
