I neglected to point out an editorial today that faults former Democratic congressman Michael D. Barnes, now president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, for calling Maryland Republican gubernatorial candidate Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.'s record on gun control "extremist:"

Mr. Ehrlich's record on gun issues is not one that we embrace, but "extremist"? Please. His anti-gun control record is, sadly for those of us who feel differently, fairly mainstream. Mr. Ehrlich has won an "A" from the National Rifle Association -- as many Democratic and Republican members of the House always have. He voted to overturn the ban on assault-style weapons, but he has opposed high-capacity magazines for those semiautomatics; and he has supported trigger locks on handguns, measures to control access of weapons to minors and other gun safety measures, as well as background checks, though with an NRA-backed weakening provision that would impose a 24-hour deadline on the checks.

I won't go through these items point-by-point, but it's nice to know the Post at least recognizes how carelessly the word "extremist" is thrown around.
